8D7N, 10-dives package from US$1,275 per diver

Palau is world renown for her marine bio-diversity and an abundance of large pelagic animals that includes schools of sharks and lots of manta rays. Our warm clear tropical waters are legendary amongst divers for dramatic coral encrusted walls rising from the depths to within inches of the surface. Home to over 1,300 species of fish and more than 700 species of coral, Palau also offers exciting wreck diving with one of the Pacific’s largest collection of intact WWII shipwrecks and plane wrecks.

Palau is a diver’s dream! A true “one stop shop” when it comes to diving! From sheltered coral gardens filled with colorful reef fishes and lots of turtles to current swept plateaus patrolled by schools of sharks and barracudas, Palau offers a wide and wonderful range of diving for divers of every interest and skill level. Healthy reefs, stunning walls, beautiful hard corals and soft corals, lots of sharks, huge mantas, turtles on every dive and huge schools of fish, tiny seahorses, elusive mandarinfish and lots and lots of tiny critters, all topped off with an amazing collection of WWII wrecks! Whatever your diving pleasure, level of interest or experience level, Palau diving is sure to please!

Palau’s richly abundant waters also provide wonderful leisurely snorkeling and free-diving too! See turtles, sharks, barracuda and multitudes of colorful reef fish as you glide over dazzling coral reefs.

The majority of diving in Palau consists of drift diving along the beautiful walls, plateaus and coral gardens of the outer barrier reef, a forty minute boat ride through the picturesque rock islands. While you dive the boat follows along from the surface to meet you upon ascent. Our dive boats leave the dive center before 9:00 a.m. and return late afternoon. We are open every day of the year and offer a choice of two-tank trips or three-tank trips.

A Typical Dive Day in Palau with Sam’s Tours
Guests are picked up by either van or boat shuttles at either 7:45 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. based on their specific diving schedule for the day and arrive at the dive center within 10 to 15 minutes from all hotels. At the dive center our experienced dive guides and captains will greet you, assist you in preparing your dive equipment for the day and offer comprehensive dive briefings for the day’s dives. Dive boats generally leave the dive shop dock within 45 minutes of hotel pick-up times.

Your dive trip begins with a spectacular 45-minute ride through Palau’s beautiful inner lagoon enroute to the first outer reef dive site. Surface intervals between dives are either spent on beautiful rock island beaches or at amazing snorkel sites along the outer reefs, with time for lunch, snorkeling, island exploration, beachcombing or just relaxing under sun or in the shade.

Following the second dive (or third dive), the return trip takes you through the stunning rock islands with possible stops along the way to snorkel at Jellyfish Lake, Soft Coral Arch, Giant Clam Beach, or one of Palau’s many beautiful marine lakes. Bring your camera! Boats generally return to the dive shop around 4:00 p.m.

Complimentary return transfers are offered throughout the afternoon and evening to all Koror-based hotels. Guests may choose to enjoy sunset cocktails, light fare and beautiful sunsets at Bottom Time Bar & Grill right on the water at Sam’s Tours or may take a shuttle directly back to their hotel. Our guides will remain available to review your dives, stamp your log books and plan your choice of dives for the following day.

Our custom built dive boats are safe, fast and comfortable and fully equipped for safety with twin engines, VHF Radio, Cell Phone, DAN Emergency Oxygen and full canopy for sun protection.
We go the extra mile!
Sam Scott, who founded the company more than 17 years ago, built his reputation by going the “extra mile” for his guests, earning Sam’s Tours recognition as the “dive center with a difference”. Sam and his experienced team continue unmatched by others in delivering personalized service to each and every guest. There are no secrets; it’s our great staff!

Sam’s Tours is staffed by a team of experienced professionals with a long term commitment to the company, the diving profession and excellent customer service. Our recognition among scuba-divers as Palau ’s leading dive center is testament to our skilled staff, many of whom have been serving our guests for 10 years or more. Our professional diving staff consists of experienced, licensed and insured PADI diving professionals that includes marine biologists, professionally trained naturalist guides, published underwater photographers and licensed boat captains.

Palau’s world-class diving ranks it among the top ten dive destinations in the world. With a reputation like that, diver expectations are high and the choice of diving centers becomes an even more important decision. Choosing the right dive center can make the difference between just another dive trip or enjoying a “trip of a lifetime!”

We are open every day of the year and offer a selection of dives two-tank and three-tank dives based on customer preferences. The choice of dive sites for any given day is based on a combination of weather conditions, tidal exchange, customer requests, and divers’ skill and comfort levels. Our experienced professional guides will share their local diving knowledge and assist you in selecting dives you’re mostly likely to enjoy. Sit back, relax and leave the diving to us!

But you don’t have to take our word for it! Just ask around. That’s what Scuba Diving Magazine has been doing for many years and the results are both consistent and clear. Since 1997, no other dive center in Palau or Micronesia has received more Scuba Diving Magazine, Readers Choice Awards, than Sam’s Tours. Sam’s Tours, the divers’ choice in Palau !

In addition to a top-rated staff and quality service, Sam’s Tours offers Palau’s best diving value!

Sam’s Tours was the first dive center in Palau to offer Nitrox in 1997 and offers divers the comfort and safety of unlimited NITROX up to 36% on every dive at no additional charge. Compare to $15 per tank or up to $30 per day extra at other dive centers. PADI Nitrox certification courses are offered every day!

• A Few Words about Nitrox: The air we breathe contains approximately 79% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Enriched Air (EANx) also known as Nitrox, is simply air containing less nitrogen and more oxygen (oxygen enriched). Reduced nitrogen levels in Nitrox offer divers a safety benefit of lower nitrogen build up during dives and or longer bottom times when diving. Many divers also report feeling less fatigued when using Nitrox. As a result, Nitrox is fast becoming the breathing gas of choice with sport divers for its’ added safety and comfort.

• Three Dives for Less: Sam’s Tours offers Palau’s lowest cost 3-tank dive day, and yes! that’s whether you choose to dive out on the reefs or on the wrecks, and of course it includes Nitrox for Free! Why pay more?

• Jellyfish Lake: As always, we include a complimentary visit to the mysterious Jellyfish Lake with our dive trips. It’s all just part of the service! Other dive centers charge up to $30 extra.

• Unlimited Shore Diving: For those guests who just cannot get enough diving out on the reef, Sam’s Tours offers free unlimited air or Nitrox tanks to explore the creature-filled waters right in front of our dive center. We don’t mislead you by calling it our “house reef” or even a reef at all!

But there’s still lots to see and photograph, including everyone’s favorites the elusive Mandarinfish and our resident Giant “Tridacna” clams. Find Crocodile fish, Dragonettes, Nudibranchs and lots of other unusual looking creatures too, including those that are hard to find elsewhere! The abundance of marine life in this one small spot is making it very popular with photographers! Hot showers and cold beer are readily available immediately after at our in-house “Bottom-Time Bar and Grill!

• Free Drinking Water: Hydration is very important for diver safety. Travellers don’t want to take a chance on unsafe drinking water. Bottled water is expensive and it creates a trash problem on our island. Our solution is simple.

Although our water source already meets or exceeds U.S. and Palau Environmental Protection Agency standards, we triple-filter it again just to be sure, and have it laboratory for purity and safety. Guests are supplied with free good quality “sport bottles” and offered unlimited refills onboard and ashore. Photo © Mark Snyder

Fabled for exceptional macro and critters, the muck dive sites in Ambon’s huge bay plays host to an enormous variation of critters, a macro photographers’ wishlist of specimens; several different variations of rhiniopias, inimicus, wonderpus, stone fish, countless varieties of frogfish, ghost pipefish, pegasus sea moths, mandarin fish, flamboyant cuttlefish, octopi and seahorses of all shapes and sizes, in addition to the newest resident, a recently discovered possible new species of frogfish. These subjects are found on a number of sites within the bay, in addition to interesting photo opportunities beneath Ambon’s jetty.

However, it’s not all about the muck in Ambon. The fish laced sites of Pulau Tiga on the westerly coast have some of the most prolific fish life to be found in Indonesia. Blankets of red tooth trigger and surgeonfish scour the reef with reef sharks, grouper, napoleon and bumpheads regularly spotted. The underwater architecture of Pintu Kota and Hukarila Cave, signature sites on Ambon’s southerly cost, make incredible photographic opportunities and Ambon bay is also the final resting place for a 100 metre fully intact Dutch cargo vessel.

As of now, there is just one western owned dive centre on Ambon; Maluku Divers, situated on the Island’s southerly peninsula in the pretty village of Latuhalat. Maluku Divers uses their three twin engine custom designed dive vessels to travel the 10 – 20 minute trips to the closer south coast dive sites and into Ambon Bay. For further sites, the dives at Pulau Tiga and Seram, the sites are usually reached in 45 minutes during 3-dives day trips.

Christmas Island is known as one of the most unique dive locations on the planet. With pristine waters, spectacular corals, an awesome drop off and BIG and bountiful marine life, it offers divers an extraordinary experience that will never be forgotten!

At the onset of the first rains in late November to early December, families of Whale Sharks often appear in the waters surrounding Christmas Island. Feeding on plankton and the billions of Red Crab larvae that are expelled into the sea after the annual migration and spawning of the adult crabs to the water’s edge.

The Minahasa Lagoon boasts 15 cottages each with 2 to 4 beds, a swimming pool, 2 restaurants, a diving center, and various boats more than 10 meters long and private buses. Since ancient times, the local inhabitants have called this place “Mangatasik” which literally means ”a beauty which leaves you open-mouthed”. And that is how we want it to stay. At Minahasa Lagoon every comfortable and air-conditioned cottage has its own veranda overlooking the sea so that the surrounding views can be fully appreciated.

Besides the central restaurant, where the finest international cuisine is served along side tasty local specialties, there is the charming jungle resta4rrant immersed in the vegetation and high on the lagoon, a characteristic and delightful ‘hut’ where the most traditional recipes of the region can be discovered. The infinity swimming pool is “lowered” into the sea, in front of the restaurant.
The Galapagos Islands are located 600 miles west of Ecuador and offer some of the most spectacular wildlife found anywhere in the world. Nowhere else on this planet will you find penguins which live on the equator (The Galapagos Penguin) or iguanas which swim and feed in the ocean (The Marine Iguanas)! Because these islands have only recently been invaded by man, the literally 1000s of animals that inhabit these islands have never learned to fear us. This means that you can literally walk right up to hundreds of blue-footed boobie birds, red-footed boobie birds, masked boobie birds, albatrosses, penguins, land iguanas, marine iguanas, lava lizards, sea lions, fur seals, red-chested frigate birds, flamingos, finches, tropic birds, lava gulls, giant tortoises, and flightless cormorants.

The MV Sky Dancer cruises the Galapagos Islands in search of sea lions, penguins, schooling hammerhead sharks, turtles, stingrays, whale sharks and the magnificent mantas.
Morning North Seymour
• 2 dives, good opportunity to see white-tip sharks.
• Open area, moderate current and visibility.

Afternoon Bartolome
• Snorkeling with penguins and at sunset climbing to the top of the hill to enjoy the spectacular landscapes and views. (This place is possible to change for 2009).

Tuesday

Morning Wolf
• After 120 nautical miles night motoring arrival around 9 o’clock to offer 2 dives in the morning; if we find strong currents there may be a delayed arrival to 11 o’clock and we offer 1 instead 2 dives.
• In the landslide dive site: mostly schools of hammerheads, silkies, Galapagos sharks, Rays. Moderate to strong current and good vis.

Afternoon Wolf
• 2 dives in the afternoon, may explore different dive site like pinnacle.

Night Dive Wolf
• Protected area, going 80’ to find red lipped bat fish.
• Mostly very interesting night life with shrimps, lobsters.

Wednesday

Morning Darwin
• Early arrival, 2 dives in the morning, there is only one dive site Darwin’s arch, when its good is good. Descend according to the current and spent around 30 mins in a 60’ platform enjoying the fish and animals activities. After the half hour, and due the current, leave the rocks and drift with the current for around 10 mins before the safety stop.
• During the drift time find schools of silkies, during the season, the whale sharks, dolphins and others.
• Good visibility.

Afternoon Darwin
• 2 more dives in the afternoon the same divesite.

Thursday

Morning Darwin
• Final 2 dives around the arch then head back to Wolf.

Afternoon Wolf
• Arrive in Wolf at 3 o’clock, still enough time to offer 2 dives in the landslide dive site.
• There is no rules to confirm that the morning dives are better than the afternoon dives; oftentimes divers come back totally happy after the fourth dive at 6 pm.

Friday

Morning Marshall
• Sailing all the night we have a early arrival at Marshall offering great dives.
• Mantas and different schools of endemic fishes are the main norm here.
• 2 dives around the same area and then the Sky Dancer heads to the east to arrive 4 pm to Pto. Egas in James Island.

Afternoon Pto. Egas
• This is the other place where we offer a land excursion and could be deleted from the itinerary for 2009. We find fur seals, marine iguanas, Galapagos hawk here.
• 2 and a half hours land walk, the guests come back on board and wait for the night dive.

Night Dive Pto. Egas
• Not a spectacular place because it is a sandy bottom but you can find more than one red lipped bat fish in 35 feet deep water, sometimes six or seven at the same time.

Saturday

Morning Gordon’s Rock
• 2 dives in one of the most popular places in the central islands: hammerheads, Galapagos sharks, rays and others.
• 66-70ºF during the whale shark season, and over the 70ºF from Dec to May .
• Frequently good visibility.

Afternoon Pto. Ayora
• Charles Darwin Station visit, takes around two hours. After free time for shopping and visit the town.
• Final dinner either in town or on board at the regular time.

The MV Solmar V in Isla Guadalupe

The waters surrounding the island are a Mexican national biosphere reserve, and we are a proud partner in marine conservation and research.

Isla Guadalupe is a utopia for photographers, videographers and shark fans who long for pristine views and close encounters. The sharks here are mostly large sub-adults between 8′-15′ and do not bear many mating scars, which makes them makes them perfect models for your camera. Larger mature female sharks typically begin arriving at the island in October. Visibility is exceptional, averaging 90-100 ft. or more and water temperatures are 65-72 degrees.

The submersible cage allows us to descend a little further into the world of the Great White Shark. Although the submersible cage is only 20′ below the surface of the water, it provides a completely different perspective to your Great White Shark diving experience. A Great White Adventures safety diver escorts one diver at a time on these 20-minute dives. We rotate all divers who wish to experience the submersible cage as many times as conditions will allow. The view offered by the submersible cage is a photographers’ dream come true. You are actually surrounded on all sides by the apex predator of the sea. We have had an exceptional response from our guests about how phenomenal this experience is. Both professional and amateur photographers rave about the different angles available to capture the mighty Great White Sharks of Isla Guadalupe.

The Solmar V is a 112’ luxury live-aboard dive vessel based in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico since 1992.
Now under new ownership, the Solmar V is a true four-season liveaboard that takes advantage of weather patterns to provide optimal diving year-round.

We journey 250 miles south of Los Cabos into the eastern Pacific Ocean to the Revillagigedos Islands - more commonly known as the Socorro Islands - to dance with the Giant Pacific manta ray, cavort with dolphins, dodge seven different species of sharks and thrill to an occasional lucky interaction with the migrating humpback whale population. This is remote, adventure diving at its finest.

The Sea of Cortez is one of the youngest and most fertile seas on earth, containing over 850 species of reef fish, as well as the famous flying mobulas and an assortment of schooling pelagics and tropicals. We’ve been diving the Sea of Cortez for over 25 years, and we call it home.

In August and September, we are based in Ensenada, Mexico and follow the ultimate apex predator to Guadalupe Island, 180 miles offshore. This is rapidly becoming the world’s best location to dive in custom-built shark cages with great white sharks. Because we use hookah instead of scuba tanks on these trips, you do not need to be a certified scuba diver to enjoy the rush of going eyeball to eyeball with a 16′ great white shark.

The Revillagigedos Archipelago, more commonly called Socorro is located in the eastern Pacific Ocean approximately 250 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico – at the tip of the Baja peninsula. These islands have been compared to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador or Cocos Island in Costa Rica because of the big animal encounters they provide.

The Revillagigedos Islands consist of 4 islands – San Benedicto Island, Socorro Island, Roca Partida and Clarion. We simply call them Socorro. They are wild, remote and unpredictable and have been called the Mexican Galapagos. This area is famous for up close and personal encounters with the Giant Pacific manta ray, which can grow to 22 feet from wingtip to wingtip. We’ve been interacting with these gentle giants since 1992 and as a result of having worked with several manta researchers over the years, we have extensive ID’s on most of them and special relationships with many of them. We absolutely do not chase or ride the mantas, and we allow our interaction with them to be initiated by the mantas themselves. We believe that their continued willingness to interact with divers is due to the respect we have shown for them over the years. San Benedicto is by far the best location in the world to experience and photograph these gentle giants. The feeling of a wild animal this large deliberately interacting with you is something you will never forget.

There are lots of sharks in the Revillagigedos Islands - hammerhead schools, white tips, silver tips, silkies, duskies, Galapagos and occasionally tigers.

We have encountered up to 7 species of sharks on a single dive! There are several hammerhead cleaning stations that we visit each trip, weather permitting. Whale sharks are a special treat at the islands, they find us in November/December and late April/May.

We also encounter pods of wild bottlenose dolphin on a regular basis and from January through March, these islands are home to a large population of humpback whales, that come here to breed and calve. We have observed several newborn humpbacks in the years we’ve been fortunate enough to visit these remote and pristine islands. In the last few years the frequency of underwater encounters with humpbacks has increased dramatically. The scientists who visit the Revillagigedos Islands every year to study the migrating whale population tell us that after twelve years of encountering the SOLMAR V, the humpbacks now recognize our vessel and so the opportunity for underwater encounters improves. Add to the mix extremely large tuna (the world record yellowfin is from these waters), wahoo, thick schools of jacks and many other big critters along with endemic tropicals found nowhere else in the world, and you have the BEST BIG ANIMAL DIVING ON EARTH!!

Day 01 / Cabo San Lucas - San Benedicto
Departure from Cabo San Lucas about 4 p.m. to San Benedicto Island.

Day 02 / Diving San Benedicto
Arrival at San Benedicto about 1-2 p.m.(crossing takes 22-24 hours) rest of the afternoon is spent diving.

Day 03 / San Benedicto - Socorro Islands
Day is normally spent diving around San Benedicto and considering weather possibilities for a crossing to Roca Partida. After sunset boat departs to Socorro Islands - crossing takes 4-5 hours. On occasion if weather looks good we might decide to try Roca before Socorro.

Day 04 / Socorro Islands
Arrival Socorro Islands early a.m. then quick check in at Navy Base for clearance. Most of this day is spent diving around Socorro Island. If conditions are good here or it is humpback whale season we might stay another day but usually we depart back to either San Benedicto or Roca Partida after sunset.

Day 05 / Diving San Benedicto or Roca Partida
Arrival early morning to San Benedicto or Roca Partida, with diving all day.

Days 06, 07 / Diving San Benedicto or Roca Partida - Cabo San Lucas
These days are spent diving numerous sites around San Benedicto and/or Roca Partida depending on weather and if we have been able to get to Roca Partida previously. Both islands known for most of the large animal encounters on our trips. Departure after a full day of diving on Day 7 back to Cabo.

Day 08 / Cabo San Lucas
Arrival to Cabo after a 22+ hour crossing, depending on weather conditions, which means the boat usually arrives after sunset on this day. Guests overnight in port and disembark the next morning after breakfast onboard. Our dock has a great location near town for those who want to get off and stretch their legs or visit the local night spots.

Day 09 / Disembark the Solma V
All clients must disembark after breakfast no later than 9 a.m. Our crew will help you with your bags and in arranging airport transportation.
This is a general itinerary that is adjusted on a trip by trip basis according to weather and marine life. Having dived this area since 1992, our crew and boat are familiar with the changing conditions and knowledge to maximize your BIG animal experience.
