This is an island paradise of sandy white beaches, clear springs & rivers and soaring mountains that run the entire length of the island. A road links north to south and is made from crushed coral. Travel is easier by boat and the interesting Malangan culture in the northern and central part of the island is unique within the Pacific. Sorcery, shark calling, surfing and gourmet seafood including coconut crabs, crayfish, reef-fish and unpolluted shellfish make New Ireland and its outer island an escapists dream.

Located approximately 20 minutes by boat, out of Kavieng, this small, private island retreat, has a white, sandy beach swaying coconut palms and is covered with lush, tropical vegetation. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed in an environmentally friendly, island setting.

Walindi Plantation Resort is an intimate dive resort catering to a maximum of 29 guests. Being just a 45-minute drive from Hoskins Airport in West New Britain, it is a quick and easy trip. Walindi can be reached from Port Moresby first by plane to Hoskins, and then by car (1 hour).

Bright and breezy room in Walindi Plantation Resort

The hotel is surrounded by tropical rainforest and opens out to the Kimbe Bay, known for its diving sites. The surrounding diving sites, which can be reached in less than an hour, are especially attractive. Walindi is therefore considered as a grade one destination for scuba diving.

Underwater, Kimbe Bay supports an incredibly diverse marine habitat. World famous dives sites like Ema, South Bay, Inglis Shoal, North Ema, Christine’s, Susan’s, and Restorff Island are only a few of the more than 200 reefs and dive sites sprinkled throughout Kimbe Bay. All are pristine and protected by a rigid policy of “Look but don’t touch.”

70% of all coral species in the Indo-Pacific region are found in Walindi’s waters. No other dive area in the world can boast such diversity. Walindi management policy is committed to supporting this unique ecology both below and above the water. To this end, the resort is supporting the establishment by the European Union of a Nature and Marine Research Centre within the resort grounds, which will continue to monitor and research all aspects of Kimbe Bay and West New Britain ecosystems.

The MV FeBrina cruises from Walindi, the world renowned dive resort located on the North Coast of New Britain. Walindi, with its fern draped bungalows nestled amongst beach front rain forest, is a perfect home base from which to begin and end your FeBrina dive trip.

Diving Kimbe Bay and all the offshore reefs outside the Bay including the Witu Islands and North Coast “Fathers” reefs, FeBrina is your sea borne platform that provides easy access to spectacular dive areas, offering 4-5 dives per day. Some of those reefs are rarely visited by divers or photographers. They are remote with superb visibility and prolific fish life. Other itineraries are also available during the year such as South Coast New Britain, Rabaul and a longer trip taking in New Hanover reefs.

FeBrina is an extremely comfortable boat in all ways, with a friendly and experienced crew providing top class service. Sea worthy and stable, accommodation is in seven roomy twin share cabins with ample storage space. Meals provided by a top class chef are plentiful and fresh, with lots of fruit between dive snacks.

Diving is easy – FeBrina ties up to permanent moorings on top of the reef thereby eliminating any damage to the delicate substrate. Ample back deck area provides easy access to your dive gear and plenty of room to kit up, and attentive dive crew are on hand to assist divers with camera gear… the next thing you know you are in the water.

“Every dive will be a new experience!”

The MV Golden Dawn has 06 air-conditioned cabins; 05 twins and 01 master double cabin. There is a spacious lounge area with a television and VCR. With the number of technical divers increasing and the interest in re-breathers, Golden Dawn has been fitted with specialised equipment and services to meet this need. In order to offer clients the kind of varied and exciting diving that is consistent with Papua New Guinea’s reputation for world class underwater action, Golden Dawn moves between different locations in the country allowing divers to experience optimum diving conditions for each region.

The Eastern Fields & Coral Sea;
Nov to Dec & Apr to May
The waters of the barrier reef system around Port Moresby teem with beautiful flora and fauna including mantas, sharks and turtles. If you are lucky you might encounter the rare Great Hammerhead as well as his smaller Scalloped brothers or possibly Whale Sharks that have been seen right in the harbour mouth! Further offshore, in the clear waters of the Coral Sea, Golden Dawn is pioneering dive operations at the spectacular Eastern Fields, a submerged atoll rising from over 1,200 metres. Most of this reef system is still unexplored and in pristine condition. Being close to the eastern approaches of the Torres Strait the currents in this area attract the pelagic marine life such as schools of large Dog Tooth, Yellow Fin, and Blue Fin Tuna. Eagle, and Manta rays can be found patrolling the walls, as well as schools of Horse Eye Jacks in their balling formations and schools of spiralling Barracuda.

Mantas in Southern Milne Bay;
Mar, Jun & Oct
There are a number of varied dives on this schedule, from strong current to ‘muck’ dives, although the highlight is the mantas. Large coral boulders, with a healthy cover of soft corals, are scattered over a sandy bottom, in shallow waters. Big Sweet Lips, Groupers, Hump Headed Parrotfish and even Dugong make an appearance and the Giant Mantas come in to be cleaned. There are at least a dozen individuals in the three to four metre range, and you can get so close you will fill a fish eye lens.

Northern Papua New Guinea – Madang or Wewak;
Jun to Sep
The coastline and surrounding volcanic islands of Madang offer some truly great diving. One newly discovered site ‘Julien’s Reef,’ is rich with corals and large schools of barracuda and mackerel and other pelagic species. The number of Hammerhead sightings on this itinerary has been numerous, with Tiger Sharks also making an appearance. The night anchorages offer truly classic muck dives. The Wewak departure starts with some coastal wreck diving, amongst vessels of the Japanese armed merchant fleet, sunk in a surprise attack during WWII. Continuing north the outer islands of Ninigo and Hermits provide true atoll style diving with great visibility and calm warm waters.

The Boat & Dive Sites

Chertan Dive Sites

The Best of Milne Bay
Depending on seasons, creatures come and go in Milne Bay. Here are some of the outstanding dives site visited by Chertan on a regular basis.

Tania’s Reef
A large coral mount coming from 140 ft to just 8 ft from the surface. Divers are able to dive around the full circumference of the reef with a single tank. The South side of the reef is littered with soft corals of all descriptions. Large schools of fish feed off this face. The reef also plays host to giant clams and turtles.

Cobb’s Cliff
Steep drop off on one side down to 150+’ rising to just 20′ below the surface and dropping back in the center to a sandy lagoon to 60′. This site is frequently visited by large pelagics such as Manta Rays and Hammerhead Sharks. The reef also hosts a variety of macro subjects such as leaf scorpion fish, Rhinopious, Blue Ribbon Eels, Elegant Fire Gobys, and so much more.

Wahoo Point
A small point located on the North side of the mainland with a shelf from 15′ to 50′ in depth and dropping with a sheer wall down to 200+’. This site is frequently visited by Hammerheads, Manta Rays, occasionally Whale Sharks, Minki Whales and on two occasions, Orcas. The site also hosts a variety of anenomies, a school of Barracuda and very large Elephant ear sponges. A great place for wide angle photography.

Cherie’s Reef
This is a beautiful drift dive along a slope that’s covered with large Gorgonians and littered with large schools of fish. Particular Gorgonians host the infamous Pigmy Sea Horse.

Observation Point
A true rubble dive. Sand slopes going down 100′ host snake eels, Star Gazers, Pipe fish, Flamboyant cuttle fish, Mimic Octopus, Spanish Dancers, Cuttle fish, Fire urchins with Coleman shrimp and the Bugs Bunny Scorpion fish.

Sponge Heaven
A sheer wall starting at 2′ below the surface dropping to 200+’ Honey combed with small caves. Huge variety of sponges and home to a variety of Nudibranchs, including the large Spanish Dancer.

Jason’s Reef
A small coral mound located in 150 feet of water. This mound has large schools of Banner fish and Fusiliers as well as many pelagics. Also on this mound is the sought after Rhinopious or Weedy Scorpion fish.

Little China
A coral mound coming out of 150 feet of water. Typical of over 30 dive sites in close proximity. Large schools of fish over the front face, soft coral gardens where both macro and wide angle photographers can be more than satisfied.

Michelle’s Reef
Located on the North Coast, this dive site provides both macro and wide angle. A shallow wall dropping off to 25 feet. Beautiful swim-through with gorgonians growing off the wall and sea bed. Able to shoot up into the jungle canopy from 20 feet of water. Also ideal for macro, a large variety of nudibranchs, Pegasus fish and on occasions Mimic octopus.

Crinoid City
Coral mound coming up from 120 feet of water. As it’s name suggests, it plays host to a variety of crinoids. The front slope of this reef is covered with a variety of black coral trees. Off the slope, huge schools of fusiliers, anthias and jacks circle. Excellent for wide angle.

Pelagic Point
This dive site has relatively strong current and because of this there are large quantities of fish patrolling a steep wall dropping off to 130 feet. Sharks are often sighted on this site. The top of the reef which is approximately 215 feet, has a large number of bommies hosting a magnificent variety of sea life, ie: crabs, rays, rays not to mention all the fish.
