8D7N Diving @ Sorido Bay Resort,
Raja Ampat , Indonesia!

Papua is one of the wildest and least explored dive areas in the world. Dive Papua and you will find that the Papua diving is far superior to the diving in Wakatobi, Bali, Komodo, Kalimantan, Manado, and other areas of Sulawesi.

Sorido beach
Sorido Beach on Kri Island

Imminent scientist Dr. Gerry Allen stated in a report for Conservation International, that the reefs were among the best he had ever seen and that he had never seen so many big fish during any of his previous visits in Indonesia”. Papua has huge schools of fish, tiny seahorses, really pristene corals and islands.

Dive Sites
The number of dive sites which can be reached from the Resort are too many to mention individually.

Manta rays are present almost permanently at three locations close to the resort and guests thoroughly enjoy seeing them from up close. Often they are at touching distance and it is normal to see 10 to 15 Manta Rays during one dive. Furthermore there are a great number of breathtaking reefs that are truly teeming with life.

Most dives are drift dives due to strong currents in the area. The currents provide nutrients for the outstanding quantity and variety of fish life and corals in the area. A fabulous variety of colorful soft corals and plenty of reef fish are found at most sites. Large schools of fish are known to populate some areas, pelagics such as sharks, Manta and Mobula Rays, dolphin, whales and turtles are frequent sights.

Visibility is good, but not spectacular, and is best in the morning dives. The water temperature is 28°-29°C year round.

And if that is not enough, there are the Manokwari wreck dives. These are WW II wrecks which were only discovered relatively recently. Since diving in this region is still in it’s infancy, the wrecks have not been plundered as in Truk Lagoon, PNG, the Solomons, Vanuatu and other well-known wreck diving areas. By special arrangement, Papua Diving can schedule to dive wrecks in the Manokwari area (on the east side of the bird’s head).

We have found some world-class dive sites while exploring the area between our eco-resort and Wayag.

Currents Please also be aware that there are sometimes strong currents in this area which is one of the reasons for so many fish. If you have a reef hook please bring it.

Equipment Rental We do not rent wetsuits so please bring your own. We have a limited supply of other dive equipment for rent so if you need to hire gear please let us know exactly what you need in advance with sizes required.

We collect payments on behalf of Conservation International . Rp350,000 goes towards conservation purposes and the remaining Rp 150,000 goes to local government.

However we do offer special day trips to sites located about one hour away from the resort and if people request to go outside the 10km zone we charge extra for fuel depending on the distance. Fuel is very expensive here and increasing constantly. Our current fuel surcharges range from Euro 20.00 p/p to Euros 60.00 p/p based on 4 people sharing a boat.

Sorido Bay

Sorido Bay Resort
Opened in late 2004, this dive / eco resort allows you to experience more Western style comforts in a Papuan setting. Located on a beautiful deep lagoon and white sand beach on Kri Island, the dive resort is only a stone’s throw away from one of the most spectacular dive sites in Raja Ampat, Cape Kri. Both the resort and the dive operation are run by the pioneers of Papua diving, Max Ammer and his team.

It is very photographer and videographer friendly and we have made efforts to make it second to none. The resort has all luxuries in nine separate bungalows while being built to high environmentally friendly standards. The new resort is also located in the heart of the Raja Ampat on the island of Kri a short distance from Cape Kri.

Kaimana Cottage

The Resort has two main buildings with in them: lobby, office, restaurant, kitchen, storage rooms, library, photo – video rooms, dive/souvenir shop and technical department.

Each bungalow is decorated/furnished in a special Papuan style using museum quality artifacts. Great attention is given to the smallest details. The resort will is photographer friendly. Each building has a 60 x 330 cm table specially for camera work with good light and 110V and 220V build-in electricity outlets (all electricity goes via an AVR). Also the tables have each a build-in sink and running water!!!

All bungalows have ensuite facilities and a courtyard. The 2 different types of bungalows are as follows

  • Sentani 65m2 (215 sq ft)
  • Kaimana 90m2 (300 sq ft)

Sorido jetty

Kri Eco

Kri Eco Resort – affordable dive packages in rustic accommodation
Kri Eco is Sorido Bay’s less sophisticated little sister. Here you find water bungalows – for a maximum of 20 guests. Because of the construction, you have a cool sea breeze flowing through and great panoramic views of the surrounding area – so even from your bed you can hear the sound of the sea!

Some bungalows are located on the jetty itself, while the others have their own piers from the beach. All of them are traditionally built with local materials, such as round wood, bamboo, palm trees leaves – all lashed together with vines from the jungle.

Each building contains two sleeping rooms and at least one separate sitting area, furnished with locally made bamboo table, benches and hammocks. The guest accommodations are divided by partitions, and each room has sliding doors which can be closed for privacy.

Each room has 24-hour electricity, western style bed & mattress, mosquito net, an electric fan, chairs & desk, side tables & reading lamps.

There is also a camera table with several sockets where guests can work or charge their camera gear.

Housekeeping provides fresh drinking water and towels everyday to the room. Close to the sleeping accommodation, on land, are six very clean & spacious Indonesian style bathrooms (called mandis) for our guests to share.
