Papua Diving (formerly Irian Diving) is an eco-tourism SCUBA diving operation located near Sorong, Indonesia, on the far western end of the island of New Guinea. Papua Diving offers SCUBA dive trips based from two eco-resorts in the Raja Ampat Islands located in the midst of a gigantic reef system.
Papua is one of the wildest and least explored dive areas in the world. Dive Papua and you will find that the Papua diving is far superior to the diving in Wakatobi, Bali, Komodo, Kalimantan, Manado, and other areas of Sulawesi. The accommodations are situated in the midst of a vast reef system, so diving by liveaboard dive boat is not essential to get 4 great dives per day, in fact, you will get more dives per day with Papua Diving than aboard Pindito or Sea Trek, liveaboard operators that occasionally dive through the area. Imminent scientist Gerry Allen: “On his first visit with Irian Diving (Now Papua Diving), Dr. Allen stated in a report for Conservation International, that the reefs were among the best he had ever seen and that he had never seen so many big fish during any of his previous visits in Indonesia”. Papua has huge schools of fish, tiny seahorses, really pristene corals and islands.
Kri Eco Resort
The Resort consists of traditional buildings over the water, along a jetty and offers traditional Papuan accommodation with excellent food and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
Our house reef is Cape Kri, where Dr. Gerry Allen in 2001 broke his former record sighting of 203 fish species, to set a new record of 283 fish species spotted in one dive!

Sorido Bay Resort - Luxury in Paradise
Our newly built Resort is THE TOP of the line. It is very photographer and videographer friendly and we have made efforts to make it second to none. The resort has all luxuries in nine separate bungalows while being built to high environmentally friendly standards. The new resort is also located in the heart of the Raja Ampat on the island of Kri.
Dive Sites
The number of dive sites which can be reached from the Resort are too many to mention individually.
Manta rays are present almost permanently at three locations close to the resort and guests thoroughly enjoy seeing them from up close. Often they are at touching distance and it is normal to see 10 to 15 Manta Rays during one dive. Furthermore there are a great number of breathtaking reefs that are truly teeming with life.
Most dives are drift dives due to strong currents in the area. The currents provide nutrients for the outstanding quantity and variety of fish life and corals in the area. A fabulous variety of colorful soft corals and plenty of reef fish are found at most sites. Large schools of fish are known to populate some areas, pelagics such as sharks, Manta and Mobula Rays, dolphin, whales and turtles are frequent sights.
Visibility is good, but not spectacular, and is best in the morning dives. The water temperature is 28°-29°C year round.
And if that is not enough, there are the Manokwari wreck dives. These are WW II wrecks which were only discovered relatively recently. Since diving in this region is still in it’s infancy, the wrecks have not been plundered as in Truk Lagoon, PNG, the Solomons, Vanuatu and other well-known wreck diving areas. By special arrangement, Papua Diving can schedule to dive wrecks in the Manokwari area (on the east side of the bird’s head).
Special Expeditions
Each year we arrange one or more special trips. Such trips could be to explore remote places, have a scientific purpose or search for shipwrecks or aircraft wrecks.. This year a visit to Amsterdam Island for some Pioneer Diving and to visit the vast Leatherback Turtle nesting area is planned. Wayag, an area of beautiful landscapes, is a must-see location. We have found some world-class dive sites while exploring the area between our eco-resort and Wayag.

IMPORTANT NOTES!

- All dive packages are non refundable!
- Each Sunday, transfers by boat take place from the airport/coastal city of Sorong (Papua) to the dive resorts, located on Kri Island. The trip takes about one and a half hours and covers 75 km. These transfers are free of charge. If you do plan to arrive in Sorong on a Saturday, we are more than happy to arrange accommodation for you in Sorong.
- For transfers other than our regular Sunday transfers, a charge of EUR €350 per transfer applies. This is a charge for the boat, in which a maximum of 8 persons can be transferred (EUR €450 for a boat seating 12 persons). The transfer price per person depends on the number of persons that are being transferred. Therefore the transfer cost is EUR €59 per person if you are traveling with a party of 6 or EUR €350 if you are traveling alone. Of course we will always try to combine as many passenger transfers as possible, to minimize the charges per person. Upon receiving your booking request, we will advise you what the charges will be on the date you wish to travel. Children under the age of 4 can stay free of charge. Children between 4 and 8 years old are charged 25% of the accommodation price, children between 9 and 14 years old are charged 50% of the accommodation price and children over 14 are charged full price.
Diving
- There are no dive trips scheduled for Saturdays. This day is used to relax and degas, and an alternative programme is available where you can hike, kayak, snorkel or visit the illustrious Red Bird of Paradise at an adjacent island.
